This technique is becoming very popular in stem cell transplants and can be more suitable to a wider range of patients. Instead of harvesting stem cells from the bone marrow stem cells are harvested from the patients adipose tissue (fat) and removed by lipo-suction from above the Superior Iliac spine (love handles), abdomen, or other, under a local anesthetic. Obtaining stem cells from these areas is much easier and less invasive than the bone marrow procedure. Interestingly the Doctors are telling us there are 17 times more stem cells in adipose tissue than bone marrow, plus patients usually have a substantial amount of fat available for harvest. Fat can be frozen and stored for future use which can be a real benefit if a top up procedure is required at a later date. This is usually a very comfortable procedure for the patient done using a local anesthetic.
 
This technology allows the Doctor to provide the treatment and procedure on the same day. A high number of stem cells can be obtained in just a couple of hours. Mesenchymal Stem cell yields from peripheral fat are much higher than from bone marrow. Stem cell yields from the bone marrow tend to decrease as the patient ages, this is not the case with stem cells harvested from the adipose tissue. Patients receive their own autologous cells, so there is a very low risk of immune rejection.

This in-clinic treatment is completed the same day, and there is no need to ship samples to an outside laboratory and wait days for the cells to be returned for an injection on a second visit. This faster process provides increased stem cell counts, without manipulation. This treatment is much more gentle than other procedures. Gentle treatments tend to have gentle results.

The Foundation has organized trials in partnership with medical practioners in Australasia who are familiar with stem cell transplant procedures. This makes availability of treatment much easier for patients. These trials are using the Adipose Stem Cell Therapy as mentioned above. We believe we are the only Foundation in the World to be doing this. The trials commenced in October 2010 and will continue through out 2011. These trials are experimental and the selected participants will self fund their element of the trial. The individual patient results will contribute to the overall long term research program being conducted by the Doctors involved, with the statistical data to be published in the coming years.
